Natural/Alternative Migraine Headache Treatment - Not a Cure
As an initial alternative treatment Mark suggests a common herb which many migraine suferrers would have already tried - Feverfew. Unfortunately, many brands of feverfew are totally ineffective, so the author recommends that people with migraines try several different types until a good quality one is found. Each time you commence taking feverfew, however, alleviation of the symptoms won’t actually start to take effect until at least 4 weeks, and perhaps even 8 to 10 weeks after commencing supplementation. Of several different types of feverfew that Mark has trialled clinically, only a couple have been found to be effective. Although Feverfew may reduce the symptoms, including the frequency and intensity of attacks, it is not a cure for migraine headaches.
Next but still treating the symptoms and not the cause of cluster headaches and migraine, I suggest some powerful antioxidants. Quercetin is a great antioxidant, however it may actually trigger an attack because of the presence of phenolic compounds. If the person does not have an intolerance to these compounds, then quercetin should be OK. Unfortunately there is no accrate and reliable way to determine an intolernace, so of course trial and error (the painful way) may be necessary. A very good antioxidant is Pycnogenol, from Maritime Pine bark. There are several different types available, but the maritime pine pycnogenol is generally more effective than the one derived from grape seeds. The most important antioxidant in the body, in the hierarchy of all anitoxidants, is Super Oxide Dismutase or SOD. GliSODin is a supplemental source of SOD. Another very important antioxidant, which has been shown to be of benefit in clinical trials with migraine patients, is Co Enzyme Q10, or CoQ10. Several different types of antioxidants can alleviate the symptoms in many cases, but are not a migraine cure.
Other good supplements include Barley Grass, Udo's Choice Beyond Greens, Wheat Grass, Spirulina and Chlorella. Cell wall broken chlorella is particularly good for helping to chelate heavy metals (such as lead, mercury and cadmium) from the body. Anther great natural product for heavy metal chelation is Algotene. Heavy metal chelation, on its own, is also not an alternative cure for migraines on its own.
None of the suggestions listed above are actually a migraine cure. However, the pain from these headaches is extremely intense, so it is nice to know there are some alternatives that may assist in reducing the chances of getting a migraine headache attack in the future.
