Natural/Alternative Migraine Headache Treatment - not a cure
One of the first alternative treatments Mark suggests is a common herb which many people have already heard of - Feverfew. Many brands are totally ineffective, so it is recommended that people with migraines experiment with quite a few different types until you find a good quality one. Each time you start taking feverfew, the symptom alleviation won’t actually start to take effect until at least 4 weeks, and perhaps even 8 to 10 weeks after commencing taking the herb. Out of about 10 different brands of feverfew that Mark has trialled in his clinic, only a couple have been found to be effective. Feverfew is not a cure for migraine headaches, but may help to reduce the frequency and intensity of attacks.
Next, and still treating the symptoms of migraine and cluster headaches and not the cause, I suggest some powerful antioxidants. Quercetin, although an excellent antioxidant, may actually trigger an attack, because of its phenolic compounds. If the person is not intolerant of these compounds, then quercetin should be OK. Kinesiology may be one way to attempt to ascertain this, or of course trial and error (the painful way). One of the antioxidants I would suggest is Pycnogenol, derived from Maritime Pine bark. There are many brands available, but I have found that the maritime pine pycnogenol is more effective than the pycnogenol from grape seeds. Perhaps the most important antioxidant is actually GliSODin. This is a supplemental source of Super Oxide Dismutase, or SOD which is the most important antioxidant in the body. Another important antioxidant, which has been shown to be of benefit in clinical trials with some patients, is Co Enzyme Q10 (or CoQ10). Antioxidants can alleviate the symptoms in many cases, but are not a migraine cure.
Other good supplements I have found are Living Food Energy available from some Health Food Stores. It is expensive, but very good. Other products that are along the lines of the Living Food Energy are Barley Grass, Udo's Choice Beyond Greens, Wheat Grass, Spirulina and Chlorella. Cell wall broken chlorella is particularly good for helping to chelate heavy metals (such as lead, mercury and cadmium) from the body. Heavy metal chelation, on its own, is also not an alternative cure on its own.
Of course, none of the suggestions listed above are actually a cure. However, when the pain from these headaches is extremely intense, it is nice to know there are techniques and alternatives that will assist in reducing the chances of getting a migraine headache attack in the future.
Being one of the few Natural Migraine Treatment specialists in the World, Mark sees clients from many cities within the US, including:
